Can you tell your orthodontist to remove braces?

Well I have had braces for 1 year and 11 months right now and I'm kinda sick of having metal in my mouth, I'm turning 19 in a week and I think they just look plain stupid and I feel uncomfortable with them. So can I tell him to take them off and still get a retainer? Im still on elastics trying to close my bite which is a 1mm overbite that used to be very severe, my lower teeth didnt show now they do but they're still not touching the upper teeth....
